Reik was formed in 2002 in Monterrey, Mexico, by lead vocalist José Luis Ortega, guitarist Carlos "Pato" Murguía, and bassist Jesús "Chucho" Herrera. The band's early sound was heavily influenced by pop-rock and emo, which resonated with the younger generation of Mexican music fans. Their debut album, , was released in 2004 and featured the hit single "Le Custa Levantarme." The album was a moderate success, but it laid the groundwork for the band's future achievements.
