This write-up provides a comprehensive guide on what to expect, how to set it up, and how to get the most value out of a Rapid7 InsightVM trial.

Getting the Most Out of Your Rapid7 InsightVM Trial The Rapid7 InsightVM trial is designed to give you a hands-on look at the industry-leading vulnerability risk management platform. Unlike simple scanners, InsightVM focuses on prioritization and remediation , helping you fix what matters most rather than just flooding you with data. Here is a guide to making your trial "work" effectively. 1. What You Get (and Don't Get)

Duration: Typically 30 days. Access: You will receive access to the Insight cloud platform (the web interface) and download links for the Scan Engine and Agents. Support: You usually have access to the Customer Success team to help with initial configuration. Don't hesitate to book a kickoff call if offered.

2. Phase 1: Deployment Strategy To make the trial successful, you need to move beyond just scanning a single laptop. Aim for a representative sample of your environment. Option A: The Scan Engine (Network Scanning) This is the classic method. You deploy a virtual appliance (the Scan Engine) inside your network.

Best for: Data centers, server racks, and network segments. Setup: Download the OVA file, deploy it to your hypervisor (VMware/Hyper-V), and register it with your trial license key. Authentication: Crucial Step. To get accurate results, you must configure authenticated scans. Input your service account credentials (SSH keys for Linux, Domain Admin creds for Windows) so the engine can log in and check for specific patches and configurations.

Option B: Insight Agents (Endpoint Scanning) For modern environments, agents are often faster to deploy.

Best for: Laptops, remote workers, cloud instances (AWS/Azure), and servers that frequently move networks. Setup: Download the agent installer, deploy it via GPO or your RMM tool, and watch assets appear in the console within minutes. Benefit: You get real-time updates. If a user installs a vulnerable version of software, InsightVM alerts you immediately.

3. Phase 2: Scanning and Discovery Once your engine or agents are deployed, create your first Site .

Define Scope: Enter the IP ranges or asset tags you want to scan. Schedule: Run an initial "Full Audit" scan. This will take longer but provides a baseline. Discovery: Use the Network Discovery feature. InsightVM can map your network topology, showing you how assets are connected. This helps you understand where vulnerable assets sit.

4. Phase 3: The "Work"—Prioritization & Remediation This is where InsightVM separates itself from free tools like Nessus Home or OpenVAS. Once the scan finishes, do not just export a PDF. Engage with the analytics features: Triage with Risk Score Instead of looking at raw vulnerability counts, look at the Risk Score .

InsightVM calculates risk based on age, exploitability, and malware kit availability. Action: Filter your assets by "High Risk." Focus your first trial report on these assets only.

Real Risk Context Look at the "Real Risk" column.
