Hunt for the ASR 1984 Open Wheel series. ASR (ASR Formula) usually releases high-quality open-wheelers for free, and their older 80s cars are a fantastic starting point if you don't want to pay for VRC.
A modder known as "Legion" released a standalone Ferrari 126 C4. It is excellent for freeware. The turbo sound is visceral. However, it lacks a full grid and the physics aren't as refined as ASR. Great for hotlapping Monaco, bad for championship racing. assetto corsa f1 1984 mod best
