The most glaring absence is Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller. Smith brought a roguish, everyday-hero energy to the first film. Without him, the movie struggles to find a compelling center. Liam Hemsworth tries to fill the "hotshot pilot" role, but lacks the natural charisma required. Meanwhile, legacy characters like Goldblum's David Levinson and Brent Spiner's Dr. Okun are reduced to walking exposition machines, shouting technobabble over the booming soundtrack.
