This paper examines the evolution of Indonesian popular entertainment, tracing its trajectory from state-controlled television ( sinetron , or soap operas) to the current landscape dominated by digital platforms (YouTube, TikTok, and over-the-top (OTT) streaming services). It argues that Indonesian popular video culture is characterized by three defining features: affective melodrama , localization of global formats , and participatory fandom . The analysis focuses on the shifting modes of production, consumption, and cultural identity, highlighting how creators and audiences navigate the tension between traditional norms and hypermodern digital capitalism.
